Description Genuine Dendraster Echinoid Fossil – Miocene, Indonesia This authentic Dendraster echinoid fossil, commonly known as a fossil sand dollar, originates from Miocene-aged marine deposits in Indonesia. Carefully selected for its preservation and visual appeal, this is the exact specimen you will receive, as shown in the photographs. Each fossil includes a Certificate of Authenticity with a lifetime guarantee, ensuring complete confidence in its natural and prehistoric origin. Fossil Identification & Classification Dendraster is an extinct genus of irregular echinoids, belonging to the class Echinoidea, order Clypeasteroida, and family Dendrasteridae. These echinoids are closely related to modern sand dollars and sea biscuits, sharing a flattened body adapted for life on or within sandy seabeds. Unlike regular sea urchins, Dendraster exhibits bilateral symmetry, reflecting its specialised lifestyle. Its distinctive disc-like shape and patterned surface make it one of the most recognisable echinoid fossils. Geological Age & Depositional Environment This specimen dates to the Miocene epoch (approximately 23 to 5.3 million years ago), a period marked by warm global climates and widespread shallow seas. The fossil-bearing deposits of Indonesia during this time consisted largely of marine sands and silts, ideal environments for sand dollars and other burrowing echinoids. Dendraster lived in shallow coastal waters, often partially buried within soft sediment. After death, the durable calcareous test (shell) was buried and preserved through mineralisation, allowing fine details to remain visible today. Morphology & Distinctive Features This fossil displays the classic features associated with Dendraster echinoids: A flattened, disc-shaped test adapted for life in sandy substrates Prominent petaloid ambulacra forming a star-like pattern on the upper surface Fine surface detailing reflecting the original plate arrangement A central mouth opening on the underside, used for feeding These petal-like structures were used for respiration and feeding, while the flattened shape allowed the organism to remain stable in shifting sediments. Ecology & Lifestyle Dendraster was a deposit feeder, extracting organic particles from the surrounding sediment. Using its specialised tube feet and spines, it could move through or just beneath the seabed while maintaining a steady position in currents. Its presence in fossil deposits indicates well-oxygenated, shallow marine environments, often associated with sandy coastal plains and continental shelf settings. These echinoids played an important role in sediment turnover and ecosystem balance. Preservation & Display Quality This specimen has been carefully chosen for its clear structural detail and natural preservation, making it an excellent addition to any fossil collection. The visible petal patterns and overall symmetry enhance both its scientific and aesthetic value. 100% genuine Dendraster echinoid fossil Includes Certificate of Authenticity (lifetime guarantee) Exact specimen shown in photographs Full sizing available in images for accurate scale A Distinctive Sand Dollar Fossil for Collectors Dendraster fossils are highly sought after for their elegant shape and intricate natural patterns. Their connection to modern sand dollars makes them especially appealing to collectors interested in both ancient and living marine life. This Miocene Dendraster echinoid from Indonesia offers a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric coastal ecosystems, combining natural beauty with geological significance, making it a standout piece for display, education, or collection.
